REMEMBRANCE EVENT Feb. 12 at the Dean House
Memories of the late Marjorie Elliott, former Monona resident, activist, environmentalist, a founding leader in the Historic Blooming Grove Historical Society, (HBGHS) and persuasive writer in many fields, will be the focus of the Marge Elliott Remembrance at 3:00 p.m. during the Sunday Open House. HBGHS invites everyone with recollections about Marge and her activities to join in saying a few words during the program or writing their reflections for a memory book to be given to the family and copied for the archives at the Dean House. The notice of Mrs. Elliot’s death in November at the age of 97 occasioned this remembrance event of the founding of the HBGHS 40 years ago by Mrs. Elliott and Robert Bean, who served as first vice-president and president, respectively. In addition to caring for her family and contributing to the activities at Lake Edge Congregational United Church of Christ, Marge wrote a weekly commentary column in the local Community Herald, served on the Monona City Council as its first woman alderperson for two terms, and contributed environmental articles and commentaries to The Capital Times. She also played violin in the Madison Symphony Orchestra, wrote poetry, and served as president of the Madison Branch of the National League of American Penwomen.
At the informal Remembrance Event, individuals from the Monona City Council, the Lake Edge Congregational church, HBGHS, and others who are present will be offering comments. HBGHS will display photos and pertinent clippings that have been compiled since the formation of the organization in 1971 when Marge and Robert Bean gathered like-minded residents who wanted to rescue the 100-year-old Dean House from deterioration and destruction by the City of Madison.
